I spent most of last year in Africa photographing women of remarkable tenacity and resiliency. I met women who are struggling to reclaim their lives and mental health after a twenty-five year period of war and conflict in Uganda, the Congo where a woman is raped literally every minute, South Sudan where women are rebuilding lives in a country under siege, women artisans in Swaziland and women who are taking advantage of microloans to develop small businesses in Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya.
I photographed the devoted women healthcare workers on the cusp of the Ebola pandemic in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Many of these women have finally been able to return to their homes only to find they’ve lost everything–their crops, chickens, stores, their livelihood.
Today I honor all these women that opened up their hearts and their homes to me.
