Wishing His Holiness the Dalai Lama a very happy 85th birthday July 6, 2020! I was asked by his office to record a birthday message to him today. “Thank you for all your wisdom, love and friendship over the years.” If you’d like to view the message in its entirety it’s available here. I first met the Dalai Lama in the 1980’s, before he won the Nobel Peace prize and jetted to ubiquitous rock-star status. I have had the honor to photograph him a number of times over the years including for my book “A Simple Monk.” This is a photo I made of him leaving his home, stopping to bless his guard holding a rifle.
