Liz and Steve Alderman founded the Peter C. Alderman Foundation in memory of their son who was killed on 9/11. The mission statement of the Peter C. Alderman Foundation is to heal the emotional wounds of survivors of torture, terrorism, and mass violence by training indigenous healthcare workers and establishing trauma treatment systems in post-conflict countries around the globe. With treatment survivors can be restored to productive lives.

When I was first approached by PCAF to photograph their projects in Uganda I have to admit I felt I faced a challenge—how would I possibly capture the emotion of mental human suffering in an image?

I really value opportunities to work with nonprofit organizations like the Peter C. Alderman Foundation. It was an emotional evening to be a keynote speaker at their fundraising gala in New York City where I presented my photos of child soldiers and displaced people who are suffering mental health issues due to the traumatic effects of war in Uganda. Please visit their website to see more of their incredible work. http://www.petercaldermanfoundation.org
